Who it is for
- You have a service on the web and customers keep asking for an app.
- You need something that has to work without a signal.
- You want to send notifications and have an icon on the home screen.
What it includes
- One base for iOS and Android, not two separate builds
- Screens designed to each platform's conventions
- Connected to your website, shop or internal system
- Release to the App Store and Google Play handled too
- Push notifications where they earn their place
- Works without a signal where that matters
- The developer accounts stay yours
What it involves.
I build iPhone and Android apps from one codebase, so you pay for one development instead of two and both versions behave the same. From the idea through screen design to release on the App Store and Google Play.
One codebase for both platforms means you pay for one build and a new feature lands on iPhone and Android on the same day. There is one drawback: for apps that run at the edge of the hardware, native development is worth it. I will tell you up front which of the two you are.
Getting into the stores is a stage of its own and it is usually underestimated. Developer accounts, descriptions, screenshots, a privacy policy and Apple's review. I walk you through it and prepare the material.
Common questions.
Do I even need an app?
Often not. If the point is having something quick to hand on a phone, a well built website you can add to the home screen is enough. An app earns its keep for notifications, offline use and access to the phone's own features. I will tell you straight which group you are in.
What about the store fees?
Apple's developer account is an annual fee, Google's a one-off. They are paid on your account, not mine, so the app stays yours even if we stop working together.
How long does review take?
With Google usually hours to days, with Apple days, and sometimes more than once if something is not to their liking. Allow for it, and do not book a campaign on a fixed date until the app is through.
Can the app be tied to the website?
Yes, and usually it should be. The app and the site read the same data, so nothing has to be entered twice.
