A redesign starts with an audit, not with a drawing. An old site usually has pages carrying most of the traffic and content that looks redundant but holds a search position. Map that first and the redesign loses nothing. Skip it and the traffic drops with nobody knowing why.
The other half of the work is redirects. Every address that disappears without a replacement is a lost position and a link to nowhere. I prepare a map of the old and new structure and watch what the index does after launch.

Will a redesign cost me my search positions?
Done properly, no. The risk always sits in two places: redirecting the old addresses, and deleting content that looked redundant. Both are settled before anything gets drawn.
Does everything have to be rebuilt?
No. Sometimes new visuals on the existing base are enough, sometimes it is the site that needs rewriting and the visuals can stay. After the audit I will tell you which of the two is cheaper in your case.
What happens to the old content?
It comes across. Articles, references and product pages that carry anything move over with their addresses. Only what the data shows nobody visits gets dropped.
How will I know it helped?
I measure the site before and after and you get a comparison of speed and technical state. Traffic and positions are judged later, because the index is not rewritten overnight.
